Illustration
Project #2 “Google
Doodle”
Basic Description
Students will design and illustrate a variation of the “Google”
logo featuring imagery that is conceptually tied to a given day in the 2014 year.
Basic Request
The Google logo must be clearly legible and appropriate for
a Google homepage graphic. As a recognizable brand, all attempts should be made
to retain a portion of the traditional “Google” coloring (red, yellow, blue and
green) and/or font style. The logo should peak the viewer’s interest about the
trivial topics related to your chosen day of the year.
Skill Development
Assignment
Students will render an image of a glossy beetle in the
“wet” and dry techniques (using each technique in the appropriate places to
depict glossy vs. matt surfaces). Drawing should be 4” in it’s longest
direction and bug length should be drawn no smaller than 2”.
Instructor comments
Building and cataloging an image reference library can be a
great aid for speedy image production. Don’t rely on your memory of objects and
characters. And, the more images you have, and the higher the quality of these
images, the better your project will be. An image library may consist of photos
taken by the artist, print outs from the Internet and clippings or drawings
taken from other various sources. These found images serves as a jumping off
point for ideas and aid with design development as well as the speed of production.
In this project I hope you will: learn how
to find image resources, learn to combine multiple resources to aid you in the
image making process, and familiarize you with two colored pencil techniques.
Instructor restrictions
1) Each student must illustrate a relatively unknown but
interesting date (no holidays) from the 2013 calendar. This will require
researching significant details pertaining to your selected day. YOUR DATE MUST
BE TYPED INTO SEARCH BAR OF THE PRINTOUT. (To be discussed)
2) This illustration must contain imagery from multiple
“found” sources.
3) The illustration must be completed in colored pencils
using the two techniques that I introduce to you (“Dry point” and “wet”
technique). Surrounding layout and graphics can be generated digitally (Google
search page and bar used for presentation).
4) The Google Logo should be between 7 and 10” long.
5) The process that you will be using for this project as
well and all others is:
Assignment >
Discussion > Research / Gather Visual Resources >Thumbnails / Formal
decisions > Layouts/Roughs > Final Illustration
Bug Renderings, Google day research,
visual resource imagery, and roughly sketched ideas are due NEXT TUESDAY SEPT.
24th.
Final Due Date: OCT. 8th
Additional topics
discussed in class as we progress:
Board size
Figuring out the layout
How to attach the drawing
How to attach the digital print
Hi gang,
here are some nice student examples of the Google Doodle project from a previous illustration class. Sorry they are a bit out of focus and not square. Still, I think they give you the gist. The Mad Hatter piece is an excellent example of both the dry point, used in thegreen hat and near "wet" technique to describe the tea pot.
Although these examples don't have the date visible, I would like your design to have your day typed into the Google search bar.

This clever example commemorates the anniversary of Toy Story's premiere. The green alien is drawn entirely in "wet" technique. After she completed her rendering, Annie scanned her drawing in and inserted it into her screen shot image.
