Preliminary Project: Skill Development (60 points)

A.    Using the techniques discussed by artist Anne Bagby, make ten sheets of collaged and stamped pattern paper ranging in complexity.

(all due dates are at the beginning of class unless otherwise noted)

Project #3: “Leaders of Glue” (100 points)

Basic Description: Using found and made resources create a collage portrait of a famous or infamous character in today’s media. This can be a political or entertainment personality. Be sure to add an appropriate amount of depth, which may include making collage papers from news articles or creating minor environments that support your message.

A.        Spend at least a week creating and mining supplementary collage materials and finding a suitable character of which you are adequately knowledgeable. Bring in magazine and newspaper ads or anything that you may want to include in your collage. (research, research, research)
B.        Using one of the two collage techniques given in class (Anne Bagby or Marjorie Pesek) begin two 10 x16” collages simultaneously. Put some consideration behind presentation early on. You may want to tape these papers to a board to help prevent buckling and or to give you a nice edge.
C.        Explore collaging, printing and glazing techniques for your work.
D.        Likenesses of your characters should come from photo references that will be blown up or down on the Xerox machine.
E.         Make sure the visual patterns and textures are clear and subordinate to the whole (not confusing or upstaging with the form).
